Women on the home front were revolutionary because they took the male roles of managing businesses, running farms and becoming the heads of the families.

"When the war broke out the entire sphere of the woman’s world changed. With fathers, husbands, sons and brothers going off to join the ranks, women had to adapt and change their way of thinking in order to survive."

Dealing with weapons was originally a male responsibility but women volunteered to help because they men were away fighting.

  • Women before the Civil War worked in the home; taking care of children, cooking and doing chores.
  •  After their husbands, brothers and fathers left for the war, they stepped up into more authoritative positions
  • They managed businesses, took government jobs and became the heads of their families.
  •  Women were respected and honored for taking such respectable positions to help out their country.
